Abstract

In his commentary to frg. 59 of Heraclitus, Hippolytus explains a screwinstrument. Because the researchers didn't understand the connection between the  straight and twisted ways of the "graphees", they carne up with a screw related to textiles. It has been proved that no such screw ever existed and that Hippolytus' commentary refers to the geometric definition of a cylindric screw. It is suggested that the "grapheion" and its cylindrical screw are a running drill and that the straight and twisted motion is that of the workmen ("graphees") who handle it.
