La humanitas en Roma

Abstract
En las dos versiones del Pro Archia de Cicerón que han sido publicadas por la UNAM, la palabra humanitas se traduce por "humanismo". Si la equivalencia entre esos dos términos, el latino y el español, fuera total, no tendría sentido el desarrollo del tema que se me ha encomendado. Sin embargo —y aquí se ha hablado ya de lo difícil y peligroso que resulta la traducción exacta—, humanitas y humanismo son palabras enraizadas en culturas determinadas; cargadas ambas, además, quizá más que otras palabras, de ideología y de prejuicios; humanitas y humanismo representan conceptos siempre discutidos, siempre actuales, siempre cambiantes. Hay que dejar a un lado la explicación de humanismo: la palabra es muy reciente, y su significado, múltiple y vago, si no es que equívocamente limitado. Ni es el asunto que ahora nos interesa, ni habría tiempo para desarrollarlo.
