Ambivalencia y antagonismo del sentimiento amoroso en la poesía de Catulo

Gregorio Hinojo Andrés

Abstract

In several of his poems Catulo describes antithetic and paradoxical feelings. He is intensely and powerfully attracted to his loved one, and at the same time he despises and rejects her. These contradictory feelings eventuaily make the poet not only uneasy but also turn him almost insane. They can be explained by the powerful physical attraction still exerted on him by this woman, while at the same time morally and intellectually he seems absolutely unimportant. This can explain the surprising contradiction which neither the very poet nor his loved one can understand.
