Abstract

The article tries to prove that it was a relatively new custom,unknown in early Egyptian, Mesopotamian or Hebrew civilizations.It sprang from a Persian origin and influenced both Egyptianand Greek civilizations, and was connected with obsession with ritualcleanliness. Although it disappeared in later times, new Persian influencein the Islamic world originated its reappearance, and Europeanknowledge of it in modern times.
