Ψεῦδος in Words in Republic and εἰκóς Discourse in the Timaeus
Main Article Content
Abstract
In Republic II and III, Plato discusses the concept of ψεῦδος (“falsehood or lie”) and states that in some circumstances it is convenient the utilization of what he designates ἐν τοῖς λόγοις ψεῦδος. The paper addresses the arguments held by Plato in order to defend the acceptability of resorting to falsehood, points out the distinction in levels between the factual truth and the normative truth, and shows similarities between the ψεῦδος of Republic and the probable or likely discourse (εἰκὸς λόγος) in the Timaeus.
