Abstract

The topic of moumfulness and melancholy, which is dealt with by
Freud in his short treatise Trauer und Melancholie, and which is currently
studied in the Lacanian school of psychoanalysis, is also present in several
ancient sources. This article intends to show that some of the crucial elements
Freud uses in the analysis of these phenomena are already present in some
ancient authors, e.g. Aristotle's Problemata XXX, 1, and Eurípides' Medea.
