El hermeneuta (in)visible

Abstract

This essay deals with some indications about the story of Gyges, as it is in Herodotus and in the Platonic myth (Resp., II, 359b6-360d7). Furthermore the use that magicians made of some talismans in Antiquity, especially of magical rings that
granted the owner the power to turn himself invisible, is studied. Finally, the relationship between visibility and invisibility in ancient thought and its importance to modern hermeneutics, not centered exclusively in the singularity of the interpreter, but open to intersubjective control is examined.
