Carlos Garatea Grau received a bachelor’s degree in law from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and a master’s in Spanish linguistics from El Colegio de México, where he also pursued doctoral studies. He is currently a professor in the Linguistics and Literature Section of the Department of Humanities of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, a member of the Academia Peruana de la Lengua, and editor of Lexis. Revista de Lingüística y Literatura.

Among his interests are linguistic change, discourse traditions in documents of the Americas, and the diachronic study of Latin American Spanish. His major publications include El problema del cambio lingüístico en Ramón Menéndez Pidal. El individuo, las tradiciones y la historiaVariedades en competencia o el registro del español andino; and Tras una lengua de papel. El español del Perú.
