Mary R. Espinosa Ochoa received her bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and literature from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, with a thesis on “Los pronombres demostrativos en la adquisición del español como lengua materna.” She earned her master’s in language acquisition from the University of Durham, U.K., with a thesis on “Wh-Questions in The Early Acquisition of Spanish, English and Italian: A Theoretical Comparison,” and her doctorate in Mesoamerican studies from the Universität Hamburg, Germany, with a dissertation on “Los deícticos locativos en la adquisición temprana del maya yucateco.”

In 2011, she carried out a methodological collaboration with the EQUIAL project at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain. In 2007, she assisted the research team of Dr. Bernd Schmelz at the Museum of Ethnology, Hamburg, Germany. In 2003, she was a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguists in Nimega, The Netherlands. She also collaborated on the drafting of definitions for the Diccionario inicial del español de México (Trillas, 2000) with Dr. Raúl Ávila at El Colegio de México.

Since 2014, she has been Research Professor at the Institute for Philological Research, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, with the project “El gerundio en la adquisición temprana del español.” She currently teaches a course on language acquisition, childhood, and socialization in the master’s program in Spanish linguistics at UNAM.
