Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez holds a doctorate in Spanish philology from the Universidad de Oviedo, is a member of the Real Academia Española, and is a corresponding member of the Academia Panameña de la Lengua. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Universidad de Salamanca and has served as president of the Sociedad Española de Lingüística. He is currently president of the Fundación Sierra-Pambley.

He is professor of general linguistics at the Universidad de León and has also taught at the Universidad de Oviedo and the Universidad de Zaragoza. He has given courses and lectured in various countries and has chaired national and international conferences, and he directs the Escuela de Gramática “Emilio Alarcos.” He is the recipient of various awards, including the Premio Asturiano del Mes and the Premio de Castilla y León de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades 2014.

Among his writings are Lingüística y semántica, Variaciones sobre la atribución, and Introducción a la Semántica Funcional. He also coordinated the Ortografía de la lengua española and the Nueva Gramática básica de la lengua española. His major areas of research are syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, from a functionalist perspective, and he has also carried out research on phonetics and phonology.
