Chantal Melis is a researcher in the Center for Spanish Linguistics of the Institute for Philological Research, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. She received a doctorate in classics from the University of Minnesota and did coursework in the doctoral program in linguistics at El Colegio de México. Her areas of research include the diachronic study of Spanish and the relationship between syntax and semantics in contexts of synchronic variation. She has published articles on verbal valences, non-canonical marking of subjects and objects, voice phenomena, and aspect classes. She is coauthor of the books Léxico histórico del español de México (2002) and Documentos lingüísticos de la Nueva España. Golfo de México (2008), and is coeditor with Marcela Flores of El siglo XIX. Inicio de la tercera etapa evolutiva del español (2015).
