Adolfo Elizaincín earned a doctorate in Romance philology from the University of Tübingen, Germany, following undergraduate studies at the Universidad de la República in his native Uruguay. He is a member of the Academia Nacional de Letras de Uruguay, and has been president of that organization since 2011. He was a professor at the Universidad de la República until 2006.

His major works include El Atlas lingüístico diatópico y distrático de Uruguay (2000), Sociolinguistics in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay (1996), and Bilingüismo en la cuenca del Plata (1975). His areas of specialization are dialectology (especially in Uruguay and Argentina) and sociolinguistics.
