Rocío Caravedo received her doctorate in Spanish philology. She is a corresponding member of the Academia Peruana de Lengua and the executive committee of the Project on the Educated Norm in Spanish-Speaking Cities. She is currently a professor at the Universidad de Padua, where she teaches a variety of courses on the Spanish language. She has taught at a number of other institutions, including the Universities of Pisa and Valencia, and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and she has been a visiting professor at North American universities.

Her research focuses on the social and cognitive aspects of language, discourse syntax, and synchronic and diachronic linguistic variation and change. Her major writings include Estudios sobre el español de LimaSociolingüística del español de LimaEl léxico del habla culta de LimaLa lingüística del corpus. Cuestiones teórico-metodológicas aplicadas al español; and Percepción y variación lingüística. Enfoque sociocognitivo.
