Resumen
This is an oral account of the dismantling of haciendas in San Pedro Chenalhó, in the highlands of Chiapas, for the benefit of the local Tzotzil Indians. The narrator vividly describes the hard work and abuses the Indians formerly had suffered from their landlords and their ardent struggle during the thirties to recover their lands, in which he himself participated. They finally achieved their goal with the help of President Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-40). The introduction and comments explain the geographical and historical setting. The narrator speaks the Tzotzil of the pedrano of Chenalhó with intrusions from other dialects; probably due to his growing up on a hacienda where Indians from different communities lived..
