Una probanza de méritos indígenas, Zinacantan, 1621

Resumen

Ruz presents two seventeenth century documents that contain arguments that the Tzotzil Indians of Zinacantan should be treated more lightly because they went to greet the Spaniards in peace when they arrived in Chiapas, and then helped them to settle. Included also is testimony against them by the advocate general, who maintains that all the other testimony is untrue. In his introductory material, Ruz notes that there is no record that indicates that the petition of the Zinacantecos was heeded.
