Resumen

he first of these texts in the Maya-tzutujil language of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, deals with the adventures of a woman who was abducted by a black devil and hidden inside the volcano of Atitlan. Eventually the evil Itzel Binak is killed thanks to the magic arts of two local witch doctors.
The other text is the story of how Lake Atitlan was born, and how certain evil spirits still live there.

Sandra L. Orellana

Doctora en Antropología por la Universidad de California. Profesora Asociada de Antropología en Small College, de California State College, Domínguez Hills. Es autora de Ethno-historical and Archaeological Boundaries of the Tzutujil Maya y La introducción del sistema de cofradía en la región del Lago de Atitlan en los Altos de Guatemala. El titulo de su tesis doctoral es Ethnic Identity and the Tzutujil Maya: A Socio-Political Analysis, 1250-1815.
